the time bandits

Tips by Dr. Paul

Enter the Zone: The Time Bandits

Is it possible to learn an effective strategy for dealing with people who are chronically late?

Yes! There are several different and effective strategies that can be used with people who cannot keep time commitments. But, first you must assess who is the real Time Bandit: you ... someone else ... or both? A Time Bandit is someone who has questionable and even faulty conceptions of time commitments, scheduling and time management. Time Bandits rob themselves and others of the precious and costly commodity of time. If Time is money, then the Time Bandit is a robber of time currency. Are you or someone you know a Time Bandit? NOW let's get on with some possible strategies for dealing with this very sticky problem.

1. Simply tell the Time Bandit that the appointment or engagement is taking place at a particular and specific time. Don't leave this up to guesswork or mind reading. Emphasize, Punctuate and Reiterate the appointment time. That might make an impression on the person to mentally rearrange their activities in order to meet the time commitment. This strategy works well with those people that you know and recognize as being chronically late. If you are the Time Bandit, take a moment to
emphasize, punctuate and reiterate what time you are due to get up in the morning, go to sleep at night and keep all subsequent time appointments for the day and the week. Keep good records and use several appointment books if you have to. Remember to respect other people's time. Don't take up another person's precious time with your excessive needs to talk. Dont get your attention needs met at the expense of someone else's energy. If you are the subject of a Time Bandit's unconscious demands on your time, don't be afraid to cut short excessive conversations. You have my permission to protect your energies.

2. Once your time schedule has been emphasized, punctuated, and reiterated, it is time to adhere to your plans accordingly. Commence your scheduled activities at your prescribed and announced schedule. For example, if you say that you are going to leave at a certain time, make sure that you leave at that time and you do not distort your schedule by catering to the late person's tardiness. These people are notorious for their excuses and justifications for being late. Once you make adjustments by catering to them, you reinforce and reward their negative attention seeking instigations. If expect a Time Bandit to be dependable and reliable, you will set yourself up for failure and disappointment. Adopt a mental stance of independence that keeps you just short of becoming reactive. Your dependence is your responsibility. If you are a Time Bandit, try to put yourself empathically into the feelings of the other person that your slovenly Time behavior is affecting. If they can't count or depend on you, sooner or later they will separate and individuate from you.

3. It is important that you do not get upset over the late person's annoying habits. It is usually very easy to get angry and annoyed at this type of behavior. Time Bandits reinforce their own disordered time schedules by the excuses, rationalizations and justifications that they tell themselves. In effect, this is how tardiness becomes a chronic disturbing habit. If you refuse to inadvertently reward tardy behavior, the individual may get the message and decide to be more considerate in the future. Do not plan your activities to depend on the punctuality of a habitual tardy person. Always have an independent strategy that allows you to function separately from the annoying habits of others. Keep to your own responsible Time schedule.

4. If you confront a chronically tardy person on their lateness behavior, defensiveness could be the result. This could defeat your efforts to resolve this problem. The tardy person cannot and probably will not want to change the behavior unless he/she becomes aware that habitual lateness is working against his or her welfare. People change their annoying behaviors when the cost becomes too high to maintain it. Once the tardy person understands the losses that are incurred by constant lateness, that person may/will become motivated to change the behavior. Your job is to analyze the problem enough to the point of arriving at a mutually satisfying solution. If the late person cannot ruffle your feathers while you act independently, you stand a better chance of not becoming dependent on the tardy person's actions.

5. If a person continuously arrives late for a specified appointment, do not extend the appointment time. End the session at the previously appointed time. Keep to your schedule. Assess the cost of Time Banditry. Many continuously late individuals like to keep you engaged with them beyond a time that is reasonable for you. Determine that you will end all discussions, conversations, get-togethers, and meetings at a time of your choosing. Be polite and firm! By all means, do not make yourself feel guilty for not catering to the disordered time habits of another person. Such individuals possess a haywire clock in their brains. The Time Bandit does not run by appropriate and social consensual considerations of time. If it is possible, deliberately choose to acquire the social skill of being a responsible time gatekeeper. In the past, if you have been a Time violator, make it a priority for you to become sensitive and tuned in to another person's time schedules. If you keep someone up talking to you late into the evening, beyond their bedtime, you are robbing them of necessary sleep time. Many people feel guilty for cutting a conversation short because of the need for sleep or some other vital activity.

6. If you are a chronic tardy person, are you willing to acknowledge this problem? Are you willing to make a list of how your behavior affects your life and the lives of others? If you understand the causes of your behavior and the consequences, are you willing to commit yourself to changing your lifestyle to something different than what it is right now? You do understand that chronic and habitual tardiness is an integral and destructive part of your lifestyle. What losses have you incurred due to your habitual tardiness? What would be the positive gains that would come to you if you buckled down and chose to change your lifestyle and enter the zone of healthy punctual behavior?

7. Refuse to be a Time Bandit! Right now in your mind confirm and emphasize that you are not going to rob your self or other people of one of their most precious and important commodities... Time! Right now, confirm in your mind that your behavior will convey a friendly and optimistic/considerate approach to respecting your time commitments and the commitments of time of other people. Decide at this moment, that you will put yourself and others in a position of high regard by respecting your own and other people's relationship to time. Confirm for yourself that you are and can become an expert at responsible and superior time management. To manage your time is to manage your life. Mismanagement of your time and other people's time causes chaos, anger, distance and rejection.

8. Superior functioning people are capable of entering into the elite echelons of peak performance by being considerate of precious Time currency. Do you want to enter into that realm of rarefied functioning known as the "Elite?" Some people are too ashamed or feel too guilty admitting that they unconsciously desire to be a member of the high-performing elite. Are you one of those people who harbor ancient, archaic feelings of shame and guilt for wanting to perform at an elite level? Remember, you can be the best at whatever you do and at being your very best self. If you fulfill the criteria for being a Time Bandit, you will detract and diminish your capacity for peak, elite performance.

9. The psychology of character is that realm of human endeavor that focuses on successful behavior. Elite performers are known by their extraordinary technical, social and emotional skills. Are you an elite performer who can be depended upon to "Be there?" Are you reliable, dependable, well-trained, emotionally, intellectually and technically proficient? Or are you a "no-show, invisible, latecomer who disappears into the midnight of the unknown?" True champions show up on time, well-prepared, intellectually, emotionally and physically primed to do an outstanding job. Losers do not prepare well, are unreliable, time distorted and physically, mentally and emotionally out of shape. Tune up yourself by acquiring proper skills acquisition, communication proficiency, reputation awareness, integrity consciousness. Acknowledge those areas of your emotional, physical and mental repertoire that are lagging and tune yourself up to peak performance. Character is everything!

my phone is dying. thinking of buying a N70, or maybe a 6680 coz its cheaper. a 6280 perhaps? but its a slide phone (baka madali masira), or just settle with k750,, but its not 3G. hmmnn. and one more thing, i just bought my S2 and went to bora a month ago, daguldol 2 weeks ago, and had a shopping spree at nike and addidas sale. so because of my budget constraints, it looks like a battle between 6680 and K750.

graduation dress

i bought my graduation dress today during my lunch break. just days ago, i thought i won't be going (coz i rather go mountaineering actually :P) and since my bro will have to attend his "convention", i have no choice to take a cab. imagining myself hailing a cab,, in a dress is somewhat,, disturbing. and actually, i still dont have a dress... and i havent gone back to up to get my "sablay".. ayos!. saan nga bang building? at sa saturday na yon!

so just this morning, i realized thati might regret not coming. minsan lang naman ako ga-graduate e d ba? . :P ok another big problem,, actually the dress code is "filipiniana" yuckk.. but according to estee,, white dress would be fine. so looking for the right dress is my agenda this afternoon.. and i think i did quite well :P

in the other news.. i also bought a whiteboard for our project... to keep track assignments.. and para rin mejo (mejo lang) madagdagan yung ng sense of urgency ng teammates ko (i hope they dont read my blog). i have requested for a whiteboard long time ago,, its time to take some action.. >:).. when my boss saw it,he asked for the receipt and said he'll reimburse it. 200 din yun :P

how to get there

San Juan Batangas is 115 kilometers from Manila, a two to three hours drive depending on traffic situation and routes taken. When commuting, there are two options to get there. The first, common and easiest way to get there is via Lipa Batangas. From Manila you can take either Lipa, Cuenca, Batangas City or Lucena bound buses. From Lipa bus terminal (Big Ben, Jollibee, Mc Donalds) take a tricycle ride to the Lipa City Public Market. From the main road, CM Recto corner Mercury Drug Lipa is where jeepneys plying San Juan Batangas passes by. Alight at the San Juan Batangas Public Market (Petron Gas Station). From that road, the second corner is where jeepneys lying Barangay Hugom wait for passengers. The second option is via Batangas City. From Batangas City there are jeepneys and buses plying San Juan Batangas. From Lipa to San Juan Batangas, fare is 24 pesos (2001) and from San Juan to Hugom its 20 pesos.

If you have your car with you, you can take the STAR tollway to Lipa City. If you see Mc Donalds, take the right road (CM Recto). Turn right at the corner of Mercury Drug (with signboard indicating the road is for Candelaria, P Garcia, Tiaong, Rosario and San Juan bound vehicles). At the Municipal Hall of San Juan Batangas turn right at the next road after the hall with an indication that it is the road that will take you to Laiya Resort. The road from Manila to Barangay Hugom is 99% cemented or asphalted. From Lipa to San Juan, it's a 45-minute drive while from San Juan to Hugom
it's another 45-minutes drive over a 24 kilometers stretch. You know you are already near Hugom if you pass by Applaya Laiya Corporation, a ranch type resort. Anyway, Barangay Hugom is the endpoint of that road system so you don't need to worry overshooting the jump-off Barangay. At the Hugom Environmental Guides Association (HEGA) waiting shed, you can park your vehicles for your overnight stay for free.

Finally, according to the mountain inhabitants, during summer months, you can climb this mountain as well as the nearest peak, Mt. Naguiling easier via Barangay Mona in Lobo Batangas. But since mountaineers are not familiar with this one, better to stick to the conventional route.

climb information

Each climbing group is required to take a guide but the guide is not required to stay with you throughout the climb. You can just take them on your way up. The cost per guide is 350 pesos (2001) per day. Other than guide fee, a climbing fee of 20 pesos is required per each climber. The Hugom Environmental Guides Association (HEGA) was organized by the local government of San Juan with the help of UPM headed by Bubuy Francisco. They were the first mountaineers who have scaled the mountain sometime March or April of 2001 meaning the place is a fairly new destination for Filipino mountaineers. Although according to Mang Lizardo, one of the residents of the mountain, some mountaineers have already attempted to scale the mountain as early as four years ago. The locals on the other hand already inhabited the place since time immemorial. The leader of the association is Mang XXX, a former CAFGU Member.
The trek is approximately 3 hours to the campsite. It starts at the Hugom beach front towards the other side of the island- a very different type of trekking indeed. Then you will enter the forest line to a gradually ascending trail with the seascape at your back. A marker points to a branch on the trail. The left trail leads you to Naambon Falls. It's a three-minute descending trail to the falls. The waterfall is not the usual small waterfalls you encounter on most Philippine trails. It's a more than a hundred feet rock-face 45 feet wide with water gushing all over the rock face, standing proud and majestic. It's a must to visit the place so try to reserve ample time for this side trip. On your way up, you will pass by some small streams but the first potable water source is located on a house along the trail. Further upland is the house of a popular mountaineer's friend, Mang Lizardo (Zardo). For 5 pesos, you can ask them to prepare a refreshing buko juice for you. Mang Lizardo is very friendly and also works as a guide once in a while. His house is also interesting since he has quite a number of pets and some of them are exotic birds. From their hut, the trekking time is from 1-2 hours to the campsite.

200gms Cereals with about 200ml skim milk (if too much yung serving, bawasan nang konti)

Coffee or Juice
CHOICE #2
Wheat Bread (2 slices)
Scrambled Eggs (2 eggs)

This is a bit tricky cause I noticed you eat out most of the time:
Here's a tip na lang. Try to avoid rice or any form of carbs beyond 6pm.
Choose between the lesser evil na lang and go for chicken, seafood or a salad.

MIDNIGHT SNACK
Fruit Shake (see attached recipe)

PAPA DOIE'S RECOMMENDATION: You can prepare this in advance. Microwave them na lang at the office during lunch time. This recipe is very simple, don't worry!

PASTA WITH TUNA AND CAPERS
250 gms spaghetti or angel hair pasta
1 can Century Tuna (I prefer hot and spicy) If you're sensitive to spicy food, try yung regular one lang but not yung tuna in brine.
1/2 clove garlic
medium size onion
1 large tomato or if you can get sun dried tomatoes, mas okay
about 2 tbps capers
2 tbps olive oil or cooking oil will do
parmesan cheese

HOW TO PREPARE
1. Cook pasta til they're "al dente". One way to tell is when you pinch the noodle, white pa yung gitna. Do not overcook or else you'll end up with soggy noodles.
2. Mince garlic and dice onions and tomatoes.
3. Mince Tuna and set aside. Keep the sauce, you will need that as a base for your pasta.
4. In a medium size pan, saute garlic, onions and tomatoes (be careful not to brown your garlic) Enough lang to bring the flavors together.
5. Add minced tuna and oil. Cook for a few minutes.
6. Toss in capers.
7. Finally add your pasta in batches. It's easier this way. So you can mix the toppings well with the pasta.
8. Add parmesan cheese to taste.
Notice we didn't use any salt or any seasoning. There's no need since flavored na yung tuna oils.

TUNA SANDWICH SPREAD

1 can Century Tuna in brine
1 tbsp Mayonaisse
1 tbsp minced onions
100 gms or approximately 5 tbsps Grated Quick Melt Cheese
HOW TO PREPARE

1. Drain tuna and mince in bowl.
2. Add remaining ingredients and mix well.
3. Refrigerate immediately

FRUIT SHAKE
1 medium size banana diced
1/2 mango diced
1 tsp sugar
100 ml skim milk (optional) you can substitute with water
crushed ice
HOW TO PREPARE:
1.Mix all in blender and enjoy!
Sometimes I leave out the mango and add a tbsp of peanut butter.

goodbye ipaq?

i brought my non-portable ipaq today at hp service center. its still functioning,, when its in its cradel.. battery problem. havta go there twice, coz when i went there lunch time,, naglulunch din yata yung mga techinician (tama ba yun?!?). so i went back around 3pm just to hear the bad news, they cannot replace the battery because its built in. but the techinician told me check the internet for replacement batteries, but i have to do it on my own.

after googling, found out that the battery will cost me around 2t-3t. hmnn. but here's one interesting option ..

Ipaq 3630 Battery Swap [cheap alternative]
Ok, you know its hard to find a new internal battery for your iPAQ right? Unless you're gonna be ordering online then you have a big problem.Well, I was fed up with my iPAQ 3630 and basically opened it and ripped out the battery.

Well, you've seen the iPAQ Battery swap for a Nokia BL-5C battery right? But its for the 38XX and 39XX models.

Well, think again. Just follow these rules and you can revive your iPAQ once more.

DISCLAIMER: I will take no responsibility for any damage that might happen to your iPAQ. Using a Nokia battery has its downside. The iPAQ battery is 3.5mm but the BL-4C is about 5mm. READ EVERYTHING FIRST BEFORE STARTING THIS PROCEDURE!!! So installing this will create a pressure on the LCD screen if not placed properly. AGAIN, DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!

What you need:- T6 Tork Screw Driver- Nokia BL-4C battery, this is for N6100 models (if you have find a thinner battery let me know!)- Voltage Checker- Soldering Iron (preferable the pointed ones)- Three to four inches of wireSteps:

1. Remove the screws on the four corners of your iPAQ (at the back).
2. GENTLY remove the back casing (I stressed out GENTLY, its made of plastic to be patient). Start from the top.
3. Unplugged the dead iPAQ Battery (its double-taped on two corners).
4. Now, peel off the ribbon very GENTLY. It fairly easy to remove since its just tapes. Now remember the right side (when the battery is faced up) is the positive side.
5. Now detach the ribbon from the main battery cell. Be VERY CAREFUL not to cut the metal parts because its quite thin. Unfold the metal connectors GENLTY. You should have two inverted "L" metals connectors on either side.
6. Get you soldering iron ready and cut the wires in half (I am assuming you know how to prepare these wires).
7. Solder wires to the battery first. Be careful no to get any lead on the middle of the battery. See diagram below:

Top of Nokia Battery:
______________
| ||
[+][ ] [-] |
| ______________ |
*Remember: The battery is also made of plastic so thread lightly.
8. Now solder the other ends of the wire to their respective polarities on the the folds of the metal connectors.
9. Use a voltage checker for connections. the battery should read around 3.7-4volts if its new.
10. Now, fold the metal connectors on the fold marks and again on the end where the ribbon starts. AGAIN, do this VERY CAREFULLY!
11. Now use a tape the metal connectors (FRONT & BACK) and top of the battery because you don't want those parts touching other components of your iPAQ. (I suggest using the expensive tape. The white ones [not masking tape you dimwit!) that's a bit translucent).
12. Now plug the battery to your iPAQ and see if it works.
13. Now place the battery on the back of the iPAQ ribbon first and place the battery on the right side of the iPAQ (where the recond button is located). Place the wires on either side of the battery.
14. Now, place the back cover back. BE SURE NOT TO FORGET TO PUT BACK THE STYLUS LOCK ON THE UPPER LEFT HAND CORNER. Do this left side first (where the stylus is located and press the bottom lock gently until it locks.
15. Now check the LCD screen for any pressure to screen before putting back the screws in. If you see any pressure. Move the battery. (Mine doesn't have LCD pressure WITHOUT the style sleeve).
16. Now put the screws back in and you're good to go!

* ONE MORE PIECE OF NOTE: IF YOU ARE UNSURE AT WHAT YOU ARE DOING, STOP AND JUST ORDER A BATTERY ONLINE.
